One Room Challenge, Week 2

Last week I shared that I am participating in this year’s October One Room Challenge. I shared my plans for making over the dining room in our rental home in this post. In that post you can take a look at the layout of my space and see my inspiration board for the makeover. I want to create a colorful and inviting space but I do have some constraints since we do live in military base housing (this means, no paint, no changing light fixtures etc). This is also temporary housing for us ( we will be moving in March). I want to liven up our space and make it feel like home but I don’t want to break the bank on a home we will only be living in for a few months.

This week I want to share the wall treatment I’ve chosen and our buffet area.

one room challenge week 2

The dining area is actually really great. We have really tall ceilings but that can be masked by all walls, ceilings and trim being the same shade of off white. I pulled off a temporary wall treatment with thin black washi tape to create a faux moulding look. This really accentuates how tall our ceilings are. (I’ve done this on every wall in our dining room, although I am only revealing this one today).  I made a really fun Kate Spade inspired canvas to hang over our buffet area- because we’re all about healthy eating around here 😉

I would define my style as neo trad. A little old, a little new and lots of layered pieces. I would also say I’m a big fan of bar carts/trays. We don’t really drink much but I’ve kept interesting and colorful bottles to display along side a bowl of limes, our salt and pepper shakers and fun paper straws.

Our mod buffet is so perfect for the space. It was green before but I gave it fun little two toned paint & stain job.

Thanks for dropping by for my One room Challenge update and the continuation of my own challenge to blog and take pictures everyday! Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram @lovethetompkins for all the updates in between ORC posts!

Kitchen Before & After

Hey y’all! I’m so super excited to share our kitchen remodel with you today! I realized this afternoon that I have like less than 24 hours before the movers come to pack our stuff up so I ran around taking the last few pictures of things in our home! With that being said I’ll be rolling out a few posts about the completed rooms in our house. So. Without further ado, I present to you OUR KITCHEN.

Good afternoon my people! are you all enjoying this amazing weather? I know we have been! In fact it has inspired us to start revamping our back deck. Just last summer my sweet in-laws came to town and Alex and his Dad built us an awesome pergola, new porch railing and leveled out the once sagging deck.

And then there was me, who was very pregnant and very lazy uncomfortable in the heat and opted not to decorate the back porch. WELL this year I am NOT pregnant and I’m in the mood to do a little sprucing before our house goes on the market. We have a short list of things that need to be done to the deck- the biggest task is sanding the older deck boards and staining the wood a nice deep brown. This is on my task list for this weekend. Last weekend I kicked off the sprucing by up-cycling those lovely old wooden patio chairs you see above. Here is another picture so you can see just how “lovely” they were…

I know what you’re thinking…Pretty! RIGHT????

They were in seriously bad shape, the arms had been totally chewed when we had a big dog for a hot second ( he went to go work on a cattle farm- turns out we’re not big dog people, who knew!), the stain was completely faded and they were just sad. I decided that I could salvage what little shred of dignity they had left by sawing the arms off at seat level. I did that and then I added a coat of Minwax Polyshades in classic black.

The cushions I bought last year on clearance from target for $7.00 a piece which is a steal for patio cushions by the way! I decided I would just recover them. Do you guys recall the banana leaf madness that occurred last summer? I do, I’m riding that crazy train until she breaks down! I love the banana leaf print…on.anything. Dorothy Draper and I could be best friends. Well, when this madness first cropped up I splurged for some $35 per yard Tommy Bahama “Swaying Palms” indoor/outdoor fabric, which consequently you can now find for less than $10.00 per yard at Fabric.com.

I made really simple little covers for the cushions leaving two little holes in the back for the “ties” to pop through and secure the cushion to the chair.

I love how the chair turned out. I have one more chair that needs the same treatment and they will complete the small sitting area on one side of our deck( this photo shows just how horrendous the deck boards are). I topped the chair with this sweet little striped pillow. The pillow cover is from Ikea.

I put this little garden stool out as a side table, I’ve been hoarding keeping it in the basement for a few years now. And of course my little DIY gold lantern and faux succulents, because y’all know I can’t keep anything alive besides humans and puppies….and that last one is even iffy sometimes.

Y’all, thanks for stopping by and checking out what I’ve gotten accomplished on the porch so far. I can’t wait to share more with you!

Living Room Progress

Hey you guys! A few weeks ago I introduced my ideas for a little “spruce up” of our living room here. And this afternoon I wanted to share where we are in the process.

Living Room Progress

I made a little announcement on IG last Sunday that I had FINALLY gotten around to making my pillow covers! I’ve only had the fabric laying around since christmas. I’m thinking that I need to do a FB Live video on my “lazy girl pillow covers” . When I say lazy it is super L-A-Z-Y but it works and they turn out fabulous. EVERY TIME. I also ordered my coral greek key inspired pillow covers and they arrived yesterday. Got to love that 2 day shipping!

Living Room Progress

This coffee table was a sweet little DIY project involving an Ikea table and some gold spray paint. I really love the idea but I can’t take all the credit I originally stole the idea from The Hunted Interior. her ideas are AMAZING!

Living Room Progress

I’m loving the over all neutral look with the pops of color. The room totally says “spring” to me.

Living Room Progress

Don’t you love this darling toy box?? I do. It may be my favorite thing in the whole room. It was a disgusting pleather ottoman/coffee table thing in it’s former life. *Alert* I’m about to get snooty up in here* I do not do pleather. I will not do pleather. I do not care for fake leather furniture, over stuffed pleather anything…..sorry, NOT SORRY. End of story.

However, when you find a piece of ugly furniture on The Craigslist and you know that it can be made into something cute with some fabric and a staple gun, you can bet I’m going to buy that disgusting piece of furniture and make it pretty. That’s just how I get down. So of course I went with the buffalo check and added some furniture feet I had from a previous project and VOILA! Toy storage for my babies, and can I just say that it is awesome to have hide-able toy storage in the living room?

Living Room Progress

I also added two grey lamps behind the couch. I’m thinking that I want to put an iridescent glaze on them to give them a little sparkle but I need to find just the right kind of glaze and that may take me a while.

I need to create my little Amazon list so that you guys can have my sources for a lot of the accessories that I’ve chosen. I’ll try to add that soon, I also think I’m going to do a little post over the weekend about the toy box makeover or at least share a before picture. Thanks for stopping by you guys! It’s actually been really fun showing off the progress of this room instead of waiting until it is all put together to share. Little by little I’m getting over that protectionist anxiety. Do you ever worry about how things look “in-process” or am I the only one?
