Main Floor Bathroom Remodel

You GUUUUUYS! It’s finally here- the reveal of our main floor bathroom! It’s just awesome. This bathroom is EVERYTHING I wanted it to be. We did so much demo which I let Alex rock for us since I was extremely pregnant for the front half of this reno. We found some great hidden gems- like access to a closet walled over behind a huge obtrusive cabinet. This bathroom turned out classic and girly and lovely (keep in mind that we live in an unapologetically feminine house and I have a sweet husband who couldn’t care less how girly it is a.k.a I got a keeper). Enjoy

En Suite Decor Makeover

Happy Monday, if there is such a thing…. But really, it was good Monday all around here today. Our home is officially “on the market” and we had two families come and browse our humble abode today- exciting times! I’ve been holding on to this post for a while now but I’m finally ready to share the sweet little accessory makeover in our tiny en suite.
This little bathroom had two phases of updating. If you’ve been hanging around Love The Tompkins long you may remember my previous en suite post where we saw the bathroom go from this….

To this…..

Tiny En-Suite Renovation

I loved it, the black and white accessories, the gold and black accents it was great. However when I began decorating our bedroom I was not feeling the same vibe and that made our bathroom feel a little disjointed. Our room has a much more rustic glam look and I wanted that to carry over into our bathroom. So, I got creative and gave our sink cabinet a total makeover…

I added a new mirror and great accessories. Here is what our bathroom looks like now.

Wow. This tiny room is amazing. I love how everything just works in there. It definitely has the boho chic/rustic glam vibe I was after. We even added an antique door on sliding barn door hardware. Our room and bathroom did not have a door before, it is kind of a loft style.

This bathroom is as large as it can get, it sits between an exterior wall and a wall that it shares with the stairwell. the key to making this room work for us was a low profile sink and cabinet, pretty white reflective tile and a large mirror.

We found an antique door a few months back. I stained, painted and distressed this puppy and we used barn door hardware to hang it.

We are SUPER in love with this room and how the new decor turned out. Thank you for stopping by, I would love for you to sign up for my email list and never miss a post!

How I Added a Faux Finish to a Laminate Sink Cabinet

How I Faux Finished a Laminate Bathroom Sink Cabinet

Happy Monday y’all! I hope your Monday went just as wonderfully as mine did- I had the naptime trifecta going on with the kids and was able to get about and hour and thirty of shut eye myself, so I’m counting this Monday a win for all involved! Just as I promised on Instagram, today I am sharing how I added a little personality to our plain jane, laminate bathroom sink cabinet that hangs out in our master en suite. Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to read my post, it really means a lot, especially days like today when my first draft (already totally completed) was deleted before I could post and I had to start all over!!!

So let’s get to it!

image

This is how our sink cabinet started- minus the legs. We opted to use the wall brackets to save as much room as possible in our tiny en suite.

image

I added some simple trim around the edges of the cabinet doors to add a bit of interest. I used a brad nailer with short brads to tack the trim in place.

image

Next I used DAP Alex Plus fast dry caulk to fill the holes from the brads and fill the seams in between the trim and the cabinet doors.

image

This next step is CRUCIAL, but if you do it painting laminate will be a breeze and you WILL get a great result. Clean your laminate furniture and then prime that bad boy. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Zinsser’s Bull’s Eye 1-2-3 Plus primer. I use this primer for any project I need to prime and it works wonders. I like to get at least 2 solid coats of primer on my laminate furniture before proceeding with my regular paint and I have never failed. I have never had paint chip or scratch off of a laminate piece when I have used this primer.

image

After the primer was completely dry I painted the entire cabinet with grey chalk paint. Any grey or white chalk paints I use are made by me- I find that these colors translate best to DIY chalk paint so all of the colors I used finishing this cabinet were my own concoctions.

image

Next I used a medium brown acrylic paint and detailed around the corners and some of the cabinet edges.

image

I then went back with a slightly different shade of grey and dry brushed it over areas where I had added the brown paint so that only small amounts of it would show through. I also brushed it on the center of the cabinet doors and sides of the cabinet to add variation in my base color.

image

After the grey paint was completely dry I waxed the entire cabinet with clear sealing wax but instead of rubbing off the excess and buffing the piece I immediately painted the piece with white chalk paint I had thinned with a small amount of water. I then rubbed the paint with an old rag, almost like rubbing the paint into the wet wax. After I had rubbed down the entire piece I let it dry and then applied clear wax again as a protectant this time, rubbing off excess, allowing it to dry and then buffing it in the end.

I’ve had my eye on some cute mercury glass knobs from Anthropologie for a while but on a recent walk through Hobby Lobby I found this cute little pair floating around for $4.99 each, perfect fit! I think they look adorable and add just the right amount of bling to our cabinets. I’m also loving how the brass setting of the knobs pull in the gold on our light fixtures and gold framed mirror. I think I’ll be adding some additional mercury glass accessories, I just love the way they look!

Thank you so much for stopping by and reading my little run-down of how I painted our laminate cabinet. I hope I can inspire you to makeover something laminate in your life, it’s really much easier than it seems and with the right prep work it can totally last!

En Suite Decor Inspiration

Happy weekend everyone! We’ve had a busy week, a productive Saturday and now we are enjoying our downtime- I hope you’re enjoying some Saturday night downtime of your own. I want to share with you a design inspiration board I had promised in my last post. I’ve been wanting to spruce up the space and add some really fun color to cozy up our little nest. Here is my little compilation of inspirational photos and plans for the en suite….. Hopefully one for the bedroom will be soon to follow.

image

The dark grey background is the current color of our walls- Ebony Field by Valspar. The white vanity is the Lillangen vanity from IKEA that has now gotten a little faux finish and some mercury glass pulls- details to come!

I’m LOVING the shower curtain from World Market, it’s so perfect with it’s neutral background and pops of bright color.

I tracked down an AWESOME vintage wardrobe at a local thrift store and I have plans to give it a similar makeover as the rustic turquoise wardrobe pictured.

I think details like a sheepskin rug, metal hanging baskets, a large gold mirror and a colorful art piece will add a cozy punch of color and some personality to our otherwise very neutral space.

A few months ago we picked up a really neat vintage door that we will be placing on a barn door track.

I’m excited to share bits and pieces of the decor makeover as I go, the space is really coming together and looking so great! Thanks for checking out my inspiration! Happy weekend 🙂
